Five days in Korea sounds like enough until you start planning. Seoul is massive. Busan is on the opposite end of the country. How do you fit both without spending your whole holiday on KTX trains?

Here is a realistic 5-day itinerary that moves between Seoul and Busan without rushing. It works for Singaporeans with a week of leave and moderate travel tolerance.

Before You Go: What to Know

Flights from Singapore to Incheon take around 6 to 7 hours. Most people arrive in the morning or early afternoon. Do not plan anything intense for your first day. You will be tired.

The KTX from Seoul Station to Busan takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. A one-way ticket costs around S to S depending on the train. Book at least a day in advance if you are travelling on a weekend.

Get a T-money card at the airport. You use it for subway, bus, and convenience store purchases everywhere. Top up at CU or GS25. The card costs S to S and you top up as you go.

Day 1: Arrive in Seoul, Recover

Take the AREX express train from Incheon to Seoul Station. It costs around S and takes 60 to 70 minutes. A regular subway is cheaper at around S but takes longer.

Check into your hotel. Myeongdong is central and loud. Hongdae is younger and cheaper. Insadong is more cultural. Choose based on what matters to you.

Walk around your neighbourhood. Get Korean fried chicken from a nearby chain. Buy water and snacks from CU. Do not try to do anything ambitious on Day 1.

Day 2: Seoul sightseeing

Start early at Gyeongbokgung Palace. It opens at 9am. Go before 10am to beat tour groups. The palace grounds are large and you need at least 2 hours to walk through properly. Wear comfortable shoes. The entrance fee is around S for adults.

Bukchon Hanok Village is a 10-minute walk from Gyeongbokgung. It has traditional Korean houses from the Joseon dynasty. Go in the morning when the light is good and the crowds have not filled the narrow lanes.

Eat lunch near Insadong. There are quiet restaurants two blocks away from the main street that serve better food at lower prices.

Afternoon: Visit Naksan Park or Dongdaemun Design Plaza. Dongdaemun is better in the evening when the buildings light up. The shopping there is loud and intense. It is fun if you enjoy that kind of thing.

Day 3: Travel from Seoul to Busan

Take the 9am or 10am KTX from Seoul Station. Arrive in Busan by lunch time.

Busan is South Korea’s second largest city. It sits on the coast and has a different energy from Seoul. Less polished, more real.

Start at Haeundae Beach. It is the most famous beach in Busan. In May the water is cold for swimming but the beach is lively. Walk along the sand and get fish cake from a vendor for around S to S.

Walk from Haeundae to Dalmaji-gil. This is a hillside road with ocean views on one side and cafes on the other. It takes about 30 minutes at a comfortable pace.

Evening: Jagalchi Fish Market. It is the largest fish market in Korea. The upper floors have restaurants where you pick your seafood and they cook it for you. Prices are reasonable if you bargain slightly. A big plate of sashimi for two costs around S to S.

Day 4: Busan to Gamcheon and Back

Start at Gamcheon Culture Village. It is a hillside neighbourhood painted in bright colours, nicknamed the Machu Picchu of Busan. Go early, before 10am, when the light is soft and the tour groups have not arrived. Entrance is free. Allow 2 hours to wander the narrow paths and staircases.

Take the metro to Seomyeon for lunch. The area has good local restaurants without the tourist markup of Haeundae.

Afternoon: Visit the UN Memorial Cemetery if you have time. It is quiet and respectful. Allow 1 to 2 hours.

Evening: Nampodong market area. This is where locals shop and eat. The street food stalls along the main lane open from late afternoon. Gyeran ppang (egg bread) costs around S. Hotteok (sweet pancake) is S to S.

Day 5: Return to Seoul, Last Afternoon

Take the morning KTX back to Seoul. Arrive by noon. Use the afternoon for anything you missed or anything you want to do again.

If you have time before your flight: Hongdae for last-minute shopping or Myeongdong for cosmetics and skincare. Both have tax refund counters if you spend over S in one store.

Take the AREX back to Incheon. Be at the airport at least 3 hours before your flight. Incheon is large and security takes time.

What This Trip Costs in SGD

Here is a rough breakdown for 5 days in Korea per person:

  • Flights: S to S depending on when you book
  • KTX Seoul to Busan return: S to S
  • Accommodation (4 nights, mix of hotel and Airbnb): S to S
  • Food: S to S
  • Transport within cities: S to S
  • Attractions: S to S

Total estimate: S,000 to S,700 depending on accommodation choices.

What to Book in Advance

Book your KTX tickets at least 2 days before travel, especially if you are going on a weekend. Use the Korail website or the app. You can also book at Seoul Station directly but availability is not guaranteed.

Book Gyeongbokgung Palace entrance tickets online to skip the queue. The official website has an English interface.

The Honest Verdict

Five days in Seoul and Busan is tight but manageable. You will not see everything. You will not even see most things. But you will get a real sense of both cities and that is better than trying to squeeze in three cities and seeing none of them properly.

Go to Busan. It is different from Seoul in ways that are worth experiencing. The coast, the markets, the food. Busan people are warmer and less hurried.

Leave one afternoon open. Wander. Get lost in a neighbourhood where no one speaks English. That is where the real trip happens.
