You are going to Taipei with your kids. You want them to have a good time and you also want to have a good time. Here is a 7-day itinerary that actually works for families, not a list of attractions that sounds good on paper but collapses under the weight of a 6-year-old who refuses to walk further than 500 metres.

Day 1: Arrive in Taipei, Settle, Explore Ximending

Fly Scoot or AirAsia from Singapore to Taipei Taoyuan. Kids under 2 fly free on lap. Kids over 2 need their own seat at the adult rate.

Take the MRT from the airport to the city. Ximending or Da’an for families.

Evening: walk Ximending. Get bubble milk tea. Keep it light on the first day.

Day 2: Taipei Zoo and Maokong Gondola

The Taipei Zoo is one of the best in Asia and very affordable by Singapore standards. Allow 4-5 hours.

After the zoo, take the Maokong Gondola up the mountain. The views are good, there are tea houses at the top.

MRT: Brown Line to Taipei Zoo Station. Gondola station is adjacent.

Cost: Zoo entry approximately S$8 per adult, children under 12 at half price. Gondola approximately S$15 per person round trip.

Day 3: National Taiwan Science Museum and Elephant Mountain

Morning at the National Taiwan Science Museum. Interactive exhibits that work for primary school-aged kids. Allow 3-4 hours minimum.

Afternoon: a short hike up Elephant Mountain. 30-40 minutes round trip to a viewpoint overlooking Taipei 101 and the city basin.

Cost: Science museum approximately S$12 per adult.

Day 4: Leofoo Village Theme Park

This is a full day trip. Leofoo Village is in Guanxi, approximately 1 hour from Taipei by bus or car. It has a water park, a safari zone, and a theme park with rides.

Getting there: Take the THSR from Taipei to Hsinchu (20 minutes), then a taxi from the station (15 minutes).

Cost: Entry approximately S$50 per adult, S$40 per child. Book online for discounts.

Day 5: Shilin Night Market and Taipei 101

Morning at Shilin Night Market — going at noon is the smart move. It is less crowded and the food stalls are open.

Afternoon: Taipei 101 observation deck. Go before 4pm for best light.

Cost: Taipei 101 observatory approximately S$35 per adult, S$20 per child.

Day 6: Beitou Hot Springs and Yehliu Geopark

Morning at the Beitou Thermal Valley and hot springs. There are family-friendly public hot spring pools with kids’ sections.

Afternoon at Yehliu Geopark. The wind and sea have carved the limestone into bizarre formations — the most famous is the Queen’s Head.

Cost: Yehliu Geopark approximately S$10 per person.

Day 7: Souvenir Shopping and Departure

Morning for souvenir shopping at Ningxia Night Market area. Suncake and pineapple cake are the things to bring home. Buy them here, not at the airport.
