JB Day Trip From Singapore: What Actually Happened When I Took My Kids Over The Causeway
We left home at 8:30am on a Saturday morning.
My daughter asked if we could go somewhere. Not Disneyland. Not Tokyo. Just somewhere.
I checked the causeway traffic app. It was green. I said: “JB la.”
Total silence in the back seat. Then my six-year-old asked if JB had McDonalds. I said yes. That was enough.
We parked at Woodland Checkpoint, walked across, grabbed a bus at Larkin Sentral. By 10:15am we were at City Square. Total cost for a family of four: $28 return per adult, kids under 7 ride free on bus. Not bad.
How To Get To JB From Singapore In 2026
Most Singaporeans know both ways. But the details changed. Here is what you need to know now.
By Bus
Take the Causeway Link or CW2 buses from Larkin Sentral in Singapore. The bus takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. You clear departure at the Singapore checkpoint first. Then arrival at JB immigration. Then another short bus or grab ride to wherever you are going.
Cost: approximately $4-$6 SGD per adult one way. Kids under 7 ride free on most Causeway Link services. Pay in cash (RM) or use a contactless card at some stops.
By Car
This is where it gets annoying. If you drive your own car across, you need a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP). Enforcement has gotten serious. You must register your car with JPJ online before you cross. If you have not done this, you will be turned back at the border. There is no appeal process on the spot.
Petrol cost return from Singapore: approximately $50-$80 SGD depending on border traffic.
My recommendation for families: take the bus. You do not need to deal with VEP, parking in JB, or fighting the Causeway jam in a hot car with two kids asking “ are we there yet” every four minutes.
First Stop: City Square Or Paradigm Mall?
Here is the honest truth about JB malls. They are not better than Singapore malls. They are just cheaper.
City Square Shopping Mall is directly opposite JB Sentral. It is old and a bit run down. But the basement food court is cheap and that is all that matters when you have two hungry children. I got chicken rice for RM12 ($4.50 SGD). My daughter got nuggets and fries. Total breakfast: under $20 SGD for the family.
Paradigm Mall is further out but newer and bigger. It has Uniqlo, Parkson, and a large food court. If you are going specifically to shop, this is the better mall. It is also less crowded than City Square on weekend mornings.
Aeon Tebrau City gets the highest search volume of any JB mall. It is massive. It has everything. If you have three hours and you want to feel like you are in a proper Malaysian shopping centre, go there. Bring comfortable shoes. You will need them.
The Zoo Is Better Than It Has Any Right To Be
I did not expect to write three paragraphs about Zoo Johor Bahru. But here we are.
The zoo is a 15-minute grab ride from the city centre. Admission is approximately RM48 for adults and RM38 for children (2026 prices, roughly $15-$18 SGD per person). That is about one-third the cost of the Singapore Zoo for a fraction of the crowd.
The enclosures are not world-class. The orangutan looked tired. But my kids spent two hours there and asked to go back the next time we visited JB. When that happens, you know something worked.
The zoo has a petting zoo section, a small playground, and surprisingly decent animal shows. The flamingos are the highlight. My six-year-old now refers to them as “ the pink birds.” Educational.
If you have children under 10, this is the best value attraction in JB.
LEGOLAND: Only If You Have The Whole Day
LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort has one advantage over every other theme park in the region. It is in JB, it costs less than comparable parks in Singapore, and it is purpose-built for children aged 2 to 12.
A one-day ticket for adults runs approximately RM209 ($65 SGD). Children: RM169 ($53 SGD). A family of four is looking at around $240 SGD total. Compare that to Universal Studios Singapore at $98 per person for a much smaller park.
The park has a water park section included in most tickets. Bring swimwear. In the Malaysian heat, your kids will want to spend half the day in the water park section and that is fine.
One thing to know: LEGOLAND fills up fast during Malaysian school holidays. If you are going during Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, or any long weekend, get there before 10am or expect 45-minute queues for the popular rides.
Where To Eat: The Honest Guide
Breakfast at Hiong Kee, Taman Sentosa
RM14 bowl with three pieces of cheong fun. This is not an Instagram cafe. This is a grandmother making dough in the same spot for 30 years. My kids loved it. I loved it more.
Midday at City Square Basement Food Court
Air-conditioned. Cheap. Chinese, Malay, and Indian food within 20 metres. Feed a family of four for under $25 SGD.
Cafe Rest Stop: Just Want Coffee
JB has a surprisingly active cafe scene. “Just Want Coffee” has multiple branches and reliable coffee and cakes. If you need a rest from the mall action, this is it.
Seafood Dinner at Restoran Fatt Kee
Near the city centre. Fish head curry, butter prawns, and a cold Tiger beer. Total bill for four: approximately RM180 ($56 SGD). In Singapore that same meal costs $130. You do the math.

Yes. With conditions.
It is worth it if you go with the right expectations. JB is not a polished tourist destination. The malls are loud. The pavements are uneven. The signage is in Malay and sometimes missing entirely.
But it is 90 minutes from your flat. It costs a fraction of what you would spend going anywhere else. Your kids will remember the “ pink birds” and the cheap nuggets and the bus ride more than they will remember another trip to Sentosa.
The Causeway is not glamorous. But it works.
I have already planned the next trip. This time my daughter wants to see the zoo again. My son wants to try LEGOLAND. So we will do one and then the other, and call it a weekend.
That is the JB day trip. It is not Instagram material. But it is real, and it is close, and it costs less than your monthly Netflix subscription.
Done is better than perfect. A day out with the kids is better than a perfect plan that never happens.
